It seems that the stairway was so close to connecting that some folks would climb over the railing and down the bank. So, they added that chain link fence you see to prevent that. I could never understand how you could prohibit pedestrians on the north sidewalk from connecting, while allowing (encouraging?) those on the south sidewalk with that 60s (non-ADA compliant because it's too steep)spiral ramp. I guess they couldn't ignore the spiral ramp, but, by god, they'd add as few connections as they could get away with, and put a lockable gate on the Burnside stairway in case these types got out of hand.Doug Khttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03167873133774728525noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20029943.post-54537380563204719992008-04-18T22:00:00.000-07:002008-04-18T22:00:00.000-07:00A couple of years back, Tri-Met wanted to close th...A couple of years back, Tri-Met wanted to close the crossings of SW First as unsafe for pedestrians. They told the city's Pedestrian Advisory Committee that, as evidence of this unsafety, they'd had an email from a woman who said she almost died from almost being hit by a train there. Other than that, they had no solid reason for this sudden "safety concern". The committee roundly poo-pooed their application, and apparently others did as well, so they constructed the little railing thingy at the bottom of the stairs west of the tracks so you wouldn't just walk willy-nilly onto the tracks.Doug Khttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03167873133774728525noreply@blogger.com
